So here we are you guys, a month and a half away (Nov. 17th) from an actual Justice League movie combining the forces of Batman, Aquaman, The Flash, Wonder Woman, Superman and...Cyborg? Umm...okay? It should be no mystery to anyone who's read this blog that my opinion of The DC Extended Universe (as it's being called) isn't particularly high. And that's not me being a mark for Marvel, when it comes to comic books I'm a DC fan through and through (despite the fact that aside from the unfortunate "Court Of Owls" story arc, I haven't read a comic book in a LONG time). That being said, I realized I haven't exactly shared my thoughts on "Justice League" and now that we have enough trailers out we can piece together what's going on. Let's dive in.
Right off the bat, I don't think this movie is going to be any good. I just don't. I own "Batman vs. Superman: Dawn Of Justice" the extended edition and as many people said it makes the film more coherent etc. etc. etc. but that's not true. It is true that the film is edited bettered but narratively it changes nothing and all the same problems are there. The reason why I don't think "Justice League" will be any good because it looks ultimately bleak and disjointed. It should be no surprise to any comic book fan that "Batman v. Superman" was setting up for Darkseid, what with the (ill begotten) dream sequence/vision.
So as it's revealed in the trailers Darkseid's well known...er...uncle Steppenwolf is taking center stage in this film as the main villain. No. The reason I say "No." to this because if we get Parademons and New Gods in this film by the time we get to Darkseid it'll be old hat. They're blowing their load way too soon with Darkseid. Not to say that Darkseid isn't much different from Steppenwolf, he is but if we're dealing with a global alien invasion (once again) with Steppenwolf and then have to do the same song and dance with Darkseid it'll be pretty boring and unoriginal. Which is exactly why "Suicide Squad" should have been the first "Justice League" movie, after all there were very valid reasons why it should have been that way. For starters Amanda Waller already had files on the meta-humans, instead of blackmailing villains to save her ass why not rally some genuine heroes together? But no because we gotta have Margot Robbie lookin' sexy for the camera, just gotta have it.
Furthermore, Cyborg seems angry and menacing in the trailers, very monotone and that's not Cyborg at all. In the comics he's very boisterous and very emotive. I don't need him saying "BOOYAH!!" every second but he's nothing like Cyborg and that doesn't bode well for me. But getting back to my original point. These Justice League films are going to have to give us more than an alien invasion and in "Suicide Squad" you had a potentially world-threating villain that wasn't an alien that would have been perfect for the Justice League to take down and it would have been VERY different from Zod & Doomsday. The threat was big enough and threatening enough to warrant them coming together, and don't say it wasn't because the Suicide Squad came together over it.
Moving backward just a little bit, let's talk about the dream sequence/vision from "Batman v. Superman" and I'm saying dream sequence/vision because we're not sure which it was. I say vision because the omega symbol is accurate for Darkseid's arrival, along with the Parademons, but I say dream sequence because how the hell would Batman know that Darkseid has an omega as his symbol and what a Parademon looks like. Yes, getting back to that jumbled mess, what does it mean? Will Superman go evil in a later "Justice League", what the hell is Lois the key too? I doubt that'll be addressed in this movie because I'm failing to see how Lois would have ANY connection to The New Gods, let alone Steppenwolf and Mother Boxes...also Mother Boxes aren't actual f*ckin' boxes, they come in a variety of shapes and sizes, some even look like iphones....hell, iPhones pretty much are Mother Boxes.
There's just too much going on and going into this movie that I can tell will possibly be larger set ups for other movies but that's the problem. "Batman v. Superman" blew their load with "The Death Of Superman" arc, now they're going to bring him back (don't say they're not, Henry Cavill is in the f*ckin' cast list) and he could potentially come back evil or something, no one knows for sure and The Justice League is going to be dealing with Steppenwolf. Is Darkseid going to be the big bad for the DC Extended Universe? It has to be but it couldn't be because how are they going to separate Darkseid from Steppenwolf? Because if Steppenwolf (who let's face it is a D-List at best villain) is going to headline a Justice League movie they gotta make him look considerably badass, but after this who have they got left? Let me know what you guys think and if you haven't already do check out my What If...? series about the DC Extended Universe and I'll catch you guys later!
Once again, it was a nice read. With Josh Whedon being creatively involved in the film, do you think that could at least have a positive effect on the film?
