So here we are once again, "Dexter: Original Sin" trailer is among us now and coming out as soon as next month at the time of writing this (Nov. 29th, 2024) and *sigh* "Dexter" is not the franchise Showtime thinks it is, the premise of "Dexter" is very, very, simple, he's a serial killer that kills killers and the real gimmick of the show is how long can he do this before the gets caught...and unfortunately the original series answered this question (the answer being for a long freakin' time...because Miami Metro's Police Department has the intelligent of 2 rocks rattling around in a tin can...and one of those rocks is named Det. Quinn). And then the 2nd series "Dexter: New Blood" answered this question again, not very long as long as someone is paying attention, but that's the gimmick, how long can he keep this up. Since that question has been answered twice and in a definitive fashion, the need for a prequel series seems like putting a saddle on a dead horse in that Showtime is determined to ride our red-head human hacker to whatever dollar signs they believe are on the horizon.
The problem here is that "Dexter: Original Sin" is not its own series, it can't be even if they wanted to advertise it that way, and the reason is that "Dexter" had 2 series leading up to this, and within those 2 series we've discovered Dexter's origins as well as him evolving as a person, what else can be covered narrative wise that'd be compelling? "Dexter: Original Sin" is void of tension and the most it'd have at its disposal is little nostalgic quips about future events. Dexter himself is going to be safe, we know he's going to live...and live...and (given the fact that Showtime is making a "Dexter: Resurrection" series in addition to "Dexter: Original Sin")...live. So what ground can really be covered here? What new discoveries can we make from this series? Some might say it is a chance to explore characters we didn't get to in the parent series like Harry...and to that, I say we actually did explore Harry quite a bit in Dexter's own internal dialogues with him and the various flashbacks of him, we learned Harry was a morally corrupted and complicated guy. We learned that he didn't come up with The Code himself and we learned that he died from suicide.
Dexter the character being resuscitated is a very apt visual representation of the series that I don't think Showtime intended. |
This is the worst case of a prequelitis I've ever seen and that doesn't mean this series is going to be bad, I am not saying "Dexter: Original Sin" is going suck, it might not what I am saying is it has no legitimate reason to exist...other than money...which I guess is as legitimate a reason as any. I've eaten crow before, but that was with "Hannibal" and that was a reimaging of the whole series, a reboot, and "Hannibal" turned out to be amazing from top to bottom. I don't see the same thing happening here with "Dexter: Original Sin" as the parent series has too much history and too much-established lore to be ignored. Will I watch "Dexter: Original Sin"? Yes, if for no other reason than to check it out but I'm going in with pretty low expectations. I'm sort of off-topic, I'm supposed to be talking about the trailer...the trailer really doesn't offer much, it just shows Dexter getting his job at Miami Metro and being shown how to analyze blood oh, and Dexter surviving being shot at the end of "Dexter: New Blood". Laying all my cards on the table here, I don't wanna be interested in this because there's nothing to be interested in, prequels after the original series are ALWAYS a bad idea unless it follows a new set of characters and the story more or less ties into the parent series. I MIGHT be interested in a story about Harrison, and that's a big MIGHT because Harrison isn't as interesting of a character as Dexter and we have enough of Harrison's lore to establish him as a character but this...this is extremely pointless. But we'll see come Dec. 15th if I'll be eating crow or not. Catch you lot later.
