STRANGE LOG: The Last New Old Has-been After The One Before The Other One

Well, it's time for another Strange Log. There is a lot going on right now, and literally, this is a depressing time, and I won't elaborate on that simply to keep this blog light. There's a lot going on and not a lot at the same time. I'm feeling confused and disillusioned, and I just wanna talk about media. Let's dive in.

So despite the fact that I heard great things and watched the first episode and wasn't too impressed, it's been announced that "Dexter: Original Sin", the prequel series to "Dexter", was canceled after one season, and realistically, is anyone surprised? I heard great things about Patrick Gibson's performance, and the first episode was decent enough, but with "Dexter: The Early Cuts" coming out along with the "Dexter" show proper, a prequel series did not have longevity, and reasonably so, since it could have only gone on for so long before it started to mess with established canon. And to be honest, the prequel was ultimately useless. Again, I am NOT saying it's bad, I AM saying that it didn't need to exist. I'll be skipping this like I skipped the latter seasons when I buy the box set. I will be buying "Dexter: New Blood," but that'll be all. "Dexter: Resurrection," however, I am interested in and even still I'm wondering just how long that will go on. The "Dexter" Franchise (and I can't believe I'm saying that) is a weird one, because no one really knows what to do with and how to finish Dexter's story. Just how long can this series go before Dexter rides off into the sunset or gets lethal injection? Only time will tell. I've been hearing great things about "Dexter: Resurrection," so when it comes out Blu-ray, I'll be snagging it ASAP, don't you worry.

Dexter...on a date...with Jessica Jones?!

Since we're on the topic of TV shows, let's talk about BAM, ANIME! Since "My Hero Academia" is winding down, I have "One-Punch Man" Season Three coming down the pike. But lately I've been checking out some other animes and that was "Oshi No Ko", which I reviewed on this blog, "Call Of The Night" Season Two is coming down the pike, "The Eminence In Shadow" Season three is coming down the pike and I've just started "Go, Go Loser Ranger" and "My Dress Up Darling"...and...man...there is so much I wanna watch and read. The thing with anime is I actually wanna lock in and pay attention, really pay attention and absorb the story. I can't really watch anime passively because then I'll miss something, and ya don't wanna miss something while watching anime. Maybe one day I'll binge one of these bastards, BUT I don't have a habit of bingeing, and I don't have the time nor the opportunity. If I do manage to get them on Blu-ray, then I'll probably start burning 3 or 4 episodes if I can manage it. We'll see.

Nazuna...you saucy minx...

HEY, let's talk about video games because there's a topic I haven't touched in a minute. As a novice fan of The MegaTen series (specifically "Persona"), I've been hearing rumblings of a new game from a plucky studio called "Clair Obscur: Expedition 33" which is a turn-based (already interested) RPG featuring the voice acting of Charlie Cox and Andy Serkis. I heard that this game was heavily influenced by "Persona" and "Final Fantasy", and while I've been on and off again playing"Trails Of Cold Steel II" just to slog through the agonizing wait for "Persona 6", I've been looking for more games to fill my time. Now granted, I have my PS2 emulator on my PC, so I'm able to go back and replay some old classics and get acquainted with some games that escaped me when they were available. However, this doesn't mean that new games are entirely off the table, and while I wait for "Persona 6" and "Control 2", I have heard that "Clair Obscur: Expedition 33" might be just the tonic I need to really open this PC up and see what she's made of.

Can't exactly say I'm a fan of the character design...

Most new games don't really interest me, but I'll admit, a new RPG sounds fun, especially since most RPGs are getting away from turn-based and going to whatever the hell sucky loose battle system these new RPGs and the "Tales Of..." Series has. Words cannot express how much I loathe that system. I haven't seen any play-throughs of "Clair Obscur" or its battle system, but the words "Turn-based" and "Persona influenced" got my attention. I'll probably check out some play-throughs or combat videos when I can (which is right now). I keep telling people I am a very limited gamer, and if I'm asked to shell out my hard-earned cash for a game, IT better be something I'm interested in. I'm not like other people, where I can pick up any game and go. Hell, I can't even get beyond "Marvel Rivals" tutorial without getting frustrated, so hopefully "Clair Obscur" is as solid as everyone says.

Creature design looks amazing, however!

As far as games are concerned, I have been trying (keyword: trying) to play "Emio: The Smiling Man" for a long time now. I love detective stories, serial killer stories, and murder mysteries. Now, take all of that, wrap it in an urban legend, and set it in the oven at 350°F for 2 hours, and you have the visual novel "Emio: The Smiling Man". I'm not gonna lie, I liked "Heavy Rain" for as long as I could until the reveal, and afterwards I found the bonus story more interesting than the actual story, and I actually wish that was the main story. The thing that's keeping me from really engaging in "Emio" is that it's Japanese, so I really have to focus, and since this is a detective story, I HAVE to lock in, in case I miss any important evidence. Now granted, I could always consult the in-game notes and recaps, BUT nothing beats getting that information 1st hand. The 2nd problem is that the in-game music is so damn relaxing that I keep falling asleep while playing it, regardless of the time of day. It sucks because I REALLY wanna dig in! I love stories like this, but if this were in English, I don't think I'd have the same problems. This is why I can't watch subbed anime or play subbed games. SORRY, people, I just can't do it! If I do ever get around to finishing "Emio: The Smiling Man", I'll review it, but until then, I'll probably drink a Ghost and try to knock it out sometime later.

In even stranger news, a sequel to a Quentin Tarantino movie is being produced?! Yeah, prior to his final 10th movie, Quentin wrote a sequel to "Once Upon A Time In Hollywood" in addition to writing the novelization, a sequel titled "The Adventures Of Cliff Booth", which, like the title suggests, is the adventures of Rick Dalton's stuntman, Cliff Booth. Brad Pitt is coming back to reprise his role, but Quentin isn't stepping into the director's chair. This is a decision I don't think Quentin's engaged in since "True Romance", "Natural Born Killers", and "From Dusk Till Dawn". Sitting in the director's chair will be David Fichner. Quite the odd pairing, but I'm not complaining. What is weird is that this will be the 1st time Quentin has made a sequel to a movie ("Kill Bill Vol. 2", not counting since it's essentially one movie), and my question is why? Why did this story warrant a sequel? Quentin already shelved his movie "The Movie Critic", which actually sounded interesting, but just like Quentin, I'm in no rush for him to finish his career. Quentin has an almost mythic list of unrealized projects, most notably "Double V", a story about the Vega Brothers (Vincent from "Pulp Fiction" and Vic from "Reservoir Dogs"), his "Star Trek" script (which doesn't feature Scotty beaming Chekov's guts into space, shout out if you get that reference) and the 3rd "Kill Bill" film.

This would have been a print money situation.

Quentin is an odd duck because just like M. Night, Quentin tends to write and direct his own work, and while his movies are interconnected, sequels are non-existent until now. Now granted, this isn't entirely a sequel but a spin-off, but it will be the first Quentin Tarantino film to feature a character from a previous film. Although I enjoyed "Once Upon A Time In Hollywood", it's not the movie I'd pick for wanting more of. Frankly, I'd like to see "The Adventures of Jules Winfield", that was a thread left hanging worth pulling. Why not catch up with Clarence and Alabama, OR Elvis Worley can pop up somewhere. Cliff Booth was an interesting character, sure, but not worth his own movie. Frankly, in the Tarantinoverse, I'll probably sit this one out until I have nothing better to watch, which won't be for a LONG time.

A while back, I started a review of "VR Troopers", this was due to having watched it in the past but not really caring, and a stirring interest in tokusatsu media. I love me some Super Sentai and Power Rangers, "VR Troopers" was Saban cashing in on their hybrid Frankstien formula, and while "VR Troopers" never quite caught on like "Power Rangers", it was still fun and engaging. "VR Troopers" is gonna be a bit of a slog to get through, but it'll get done when it does. I'm already 10 episodes in, and I already have notes, but when I get back to it, I'll be able to dive right in.

So, I came to a sudden realization: no one has seen "The Best Of the Worst", "Deconstruction", or any of my previous shows that I had back in the day. This brings me to the conclusion that I can remake those videos and re-review movies like "Identity", "Catwoman", and "Dragonball: Evolution". Much of my movie commentary has been scrubbed from the internet and hasn't been seen by anyone. So while I'm working on my slow return to YouTube, I now have a full and unseen well to draw from that I can update and enhance by making them funnier. So that'll be something I'll be setting aside time to do in addition to other things I have planned.

As for myself, what have I been doing and what have I been up to? I'm not sure, just working, working, and working and not actually doing anything of note, and the things I have been doing, I'd rather not say. Not that I've been doing anything unsavory or illegal (my days of sailing the seven seas are over), just I haven't really been doing anything of note. That makes me sad because I have limited time and limited resources. Sure, I'm making excuses, but my schedule is constantly go, go, go, and in addition to keeping my apartment and family fed, I also have auto repairs looming over me that I have yet to finish paying for...that sucks. So I'm slowly but surely trying to claw my way back to finding time and maybe, HOPEFULLY, getting some kinda project going. We'll see. Anyway, sorry for the weird Strange Log this go'round. Here's a GIF of what I do to basically get through work, until next time.
