Why We HATE Hannah McKay

Okay kids and kittens, I've been trying to turn this into a video BUT it's been a hard minute since I wrote an article here (and whenever I try to record a video it ends up being somewhere around 22 minutes and I end up ranting), also I'm a lot more eloquent when I'm writing my thoughts, rather than verbally expressing them. So, if you guys have watched my DEXTER-ity episode for Season 7, you'll know that I didn't particularly care for the character of Hannah McKay. Much to my anger, Hannah McKay is back for Season 8 (oh goody...-_-).

Anyway, I know I'm not alone in the utter hatred of Hannah McKay, BUT some of us have EXTREME difficulty putting into words WHY we don't like Hannah McKay. SO as a courtesy to you guys, I've decided to list the MANY valid reasons we don't like Hannah McKay, so you won't have trouble listing them. Enjoy after the break! By the way, SOME SPOILERS AHEAD! SO IF YOU HAVEN'T WATCHED SEASON 8 UP TO THIS DATE, DO NOT READ (not that it really matters because you're not missing anything)

HANNAH MCKAY IS A MARY SUE
 For those of you who don't know what a "Mary Sue" is;

Mary Sue is a negative term used in fanfiction and literary criticism to describe an original character that is often overly idealized or assumed to be a projection of the author. When used by a male author, the character is referred to as a Gary Stu or Marty Stu.

Hannah McKay ISN'T a projection of the writers, but I have a feeling she's a projection of every over-zealous Dexter Fangirl who ever fantasized about bumpin' uglies with Dexter in the kill room. That scene from Season 7 just views like a scene from any lazy, sex-riddled Dexter Fanfic out there.  The reason I call Hannah a "Mary Sue" is because she suffers no consequences for her actions and is not directly involved in her problems.

Flashing back to Season 7, Hannah McKay killed Sal Price, the guy writing a book about her. When a guy writing a book about you up and dies and you were the last person who talked to him, that kinda makes you look suspicious, rather than being suspicious, Miami Metro kinda scratched their heads in puzzlement and went on about their merry little way. Hannah McKay got off scott free WITHOUT setting off any bells or whistles (hard to believe, considering the fact that she's been linked to SEVERAL murders in her youth). And yes, I understand that she used a poison that wasn't traceable in toxicology and hid Sal's pen, but all Miami Metro would have to do is subpena her garden and boom, Hannah's screwed.

Hannah is idealized in a sense that she doesn't have any visible flaws. She's beautiful and well liked by just about everybody, except Debra (because she's a jealous bitch...). In short Hannah has no real depth to make her character interesting because everything about her is surface level. Hannah is categorized as a sociopath, but she shows no sociopathic tendencies in any dangerous fashion. For example, Lila was Dexter's perfect woman as well, however Lila was a sociopath by proxy and kind of insane (that being her flaw). But it seem Hannah is only a sociopath when she's allowed to be a sociopath and then a normal person when she's supposed to be a normal person...which again, where's her flaw. It's not like Hannah is wrestling with an urge to kill like Dexter, according to Hannah she doesn't like killing people. So she doesn't like killing people, has killed (and attempted to) MANY people, and has no problem with Dexter killing people...right...

Hi, my name is Hannah McKay and like I'm like your perfect woman.

If Hannah had some kind of issue, like maybe she hates kids or something, that'd make her character a little more believable as a sociopath, but nope. She's just this perfect woman for Dexter and in any other TV show this would be comedic, but here it's frustrating because the show is constantly pointing out just how perfect Hannah is for Dexter in every way, shape and form, making us scratch our heads going "She can't be a sociopath and be this normal.". BUT Of course, Hannah being The Mary Sue that she is CAN be the world's most normal sociopath.

HANNAH MCKAY IS A "VICTIM" (FORCED SYMPATHY)
One of the main reasons I hate Hannah is because the writers WANT us to feel sorry for her, but we can't because she's emotionally wishy-washy. What I mean is this; reflecting back on Season 7 when Hannah's father showed up and destroyed Hannah's nursery, that was a moment where we were meant to sympathize with her, watching poor, defenseless Hannah (yes, the woman who went on a murder spree with a nutcase and poisoned several people shortly after) get insults hurled at her by her drunken louse of a father. We're meant to sympathize, but in reality we're all sitting there wondering why she didn't kill him herself. Maybe it would've been too obvious but er...she straight up killed Sal Price, the guy who was writing a book about her and had just left her house and suddenly had a heart attack...so yeah considering how badly Miami Metro sucks at their job, Hannah would've gotten away with it.

They were big meany heads who deserved it!

But no, Hannah cowers and leaves Dexter to do the dirty work. This happens again when Hannah shows up with her (what'ya know!) abusive, controlling husband Miles Castner, unable to kill him herself, she leaves Dexter to do the dirty work once again, only this time she does kill Miles (only after defending herself against him, cause he was a big meany head) and then she tells Dexter that she doesn't enjoy killing and does it because she needs to, because she's forced to! Yes, which is exactly why she killed that old lady, and Sal Price and all of the other people she killed during the murder spree.

I wouldn't be poking fun if it wasn't for the fact that every time Debra calls Hannah out on her bullshit, Hannah has some speech about how she's a victim and how she's doing what she gotta do to survive...basically "I'm not a bad girl, I'm a good girl who's made some bad choices.". That line ONLY works if you had a life like Mitsuko Suoma, your dad almost letting you drown in a swimming pool isn't a reason to go on a massive killing spree. Oh and for those of you who doubt me on that being her sociopathic origins, I offer you now to tell me what made her the way she is...

Still waiting...

NOTHING made her the way she is, yet we're fed this "Doing what I gotta do to survive." bullshit as if that explains everything, and to which I reply, "SURVIVE WHAT?!" Who or what is victimizing Hannah? She's killed several people and has gotten away with it and managed to escape from police custody, without changing her hair, or putting in contacts or anything of the sort and somehow still feels the need to defend herself when someone points out that she's a murderer. The thing is we can't feel sorry for her because there's nothing to feel sorry for her about, what about her grips us emotionally? What traumatic event made her this person? Nothing, absolutely nothing. There's nothing there to engage us, to grip us or anything.

DEXTER & HANNAH MCKAY/ANAKIN SKYWALKER & PADME'
I mentioned this before, but Dexter and Hannah's relationship had NO natural progression. Reflecting back to Season One when Dexter was actually unnerved about having sex with Rita, because he was afraid she'd see the real him, when they finally did, Rita stayed with Dexter, much to his surprise. Lila was able to see through Dexter's smoke screens and openly called him out on his bullshit at The N.A. meetings. Lila was also the first person to learn Dexter's origins and was present when Dexter faced down Santos Jimenez. Lila accepted Dexter, so when they finally got down and dirty, it seemed logical because Dexter finally found someone who understood him, his pains and his struggles. His relationship with Lumen went through several evolutions, starting off with Dexter being her savior and feeling responsible for her, after saving her from Boyd Fowler. Then their relationship shifted to a Master/Student relationship, when Lumen tracked down Dan The Dentist and called Dexter to help her.

After that, Lumen, being so overcome with gratitude to Dexter had to express herself in the only way she knew how, raw, passionate, sex. After all, she had just come from a place of being raped and tortured by a group of men and her killing them and having sex with Dexter was a way of not only thanking Dexter but reclaiming control over her sexuality. ALL OF THESE RELATIONSHIPS WERE EXPRESSED WITH ACTIONS AND VERY FEW WORDS! Dexter didn't need to tell us how much he cared about Rita, it shown in his actions, how he interacted with her and spoke to her and her children, ect. ect.

But with Hannah, we're being told how much he loves her but...we don't really see it. Much like Anakin and Padme'. Can you give me a specific moment in The Star Wars Prequels (assuming that you actually remember them) where Anakin and Padme' clicked! Where it was obvious that they were in love and you could tell this just by looking at them? No, you probably can't, because all they really did was stand (or sit) around and talk about their undying love for each other.

I told that bitch I don't like sand, bitches love guys who don't like sand.

I'm not saying that saying "I love you." is bad or anything, but if it's said constantly, we call that a little thing called OVERCOMPENSATING! Reflecting back to The ORIGINAL Star Wars Trilogy, we understood that Leia and Han's constant bickering back and forth was really misguided love-jabs, so when they have that scene in "Empire" and Leia finally tells Han she loves him, it's real and heartbreaking.

Hannah, do you like sand?

Dexter is constantly mentioning how he can't think when she's around, and he can't stop thinking about her, and how much he loves her, and needs her and Why ? Well because the actual chemistry isn't there and therefore we must be told they're in love because the writers have lost the ability to show us they're in love. They're in love and we just have to accept it, the same way we accept Anakin and Padme' being in love, despite the fact we can't pinpoint the exact minute when they were in love. However if we're equating love with sex, then it was when Dexter had sex with Hannah. Or when he dropped the cheek swab because he was so taken by her beauty...*sigh*...

The point I'm trying to make is that Hannah is a drain on the show because she's so paramount to the plot and yet does not advance it AT ALL.There are no stakes for us to care about her character. If she gets caught or dies, we as the viewers won't be emotionally invested in this because she's not emotionally investable. She's just hot (and not all that much if you ask me, but just my opinion). Which brings me to...

HANNAH MCKAY IS A FORCED LIKEABLE CHARACTER
You ever watch a TV show and a real solid member of the cast decides to leave and the producers replace them with someone, and then go out of their way to make that character SO AWESOME AND SO COOL that the viewers forget about the character that left? Yeah, that's Hannah McKay.  Like most new characters on TV shows, they come in with their own set of tools to get the viewers on their side. When Quinn first came on the scene, he was savvy, mysterious, a bit of a playboy and kinda dirty but good at his job (yes, there was a point in time when Quinn was good at his job). All of these character traits got us to love Quinn, the producers didn't go out of their way to make Quinn THE MAN to make us forget that he was filling in Doakes' spot.

Hannah McKay is another story all together. I say this because the producers REALLY want us to like Hannah, why do I say this? Because every plot thread is driving us towards some Hannah related issue that must be solved otherwise Hannah's going to get caught. Not to mention Dexter raves about Hannah constantly, and she's so down to Earth (not really), not to mention Harrison really likes her, in one of the most offensive lines EVER spoken on Dexter. Everything in last Season and THIS Season is instructing us to like Hannah against our will, but we've never seen a solid reason to like Hannah, and the fact that we're being told to like her just makes us like her less.

She didn't come into the series like Lumen, where we immediately felt sorry for her because of what she's been through. She didn't come into the series like Rita who was this timid woman trying to get her life back together, and she didn't come in the series like Lila, picking Dexter apart. Hannah came into the series with Dexter fumbling like a moron in an attempt to get a cheek swab from her, which Dexter has never done in the past. She can't be the first smokin' hot chick he's got a cheek swab from...he lives in Miami. Our introduction to Hannah was an obvious "HEY CHECK OUT HOW HOT SHE IS!" moment.

I understand there's a pitiful lot of you who simply like Hannah because she's hot. If you want to watch "Dexter" with your penis, you're more than welcomed to do so, but I watch "Dexter" for the character growth, the interesting story-telling, and the complex morality of the character and sadly ALL of that was put on hold when Hannah popped up. I'm not saying I wanna see Dexter kill every single episode, although...for a show about a serial killer...not much killing has been going on lately, and some of the BEST character growth for Dexter was accomplished IN THE KILL ROOM, a place he hasn't been in a LONG time sadly. All of this development is side-lined because Dexter found the perfect woman and we're supposed to be A-Okay with it because Dexter is.

They are so not okay with us being together.

I have no problem with them telling a Dexter in Love story (despite the fact that I'm really tired of them), as long as it's told with a logical progression of the relationship that's believable. And that's not at all present here. Anyways, those are some solid, rational reasons not to like Hannah. Lemme know what you guys think and I'll see you guys next time for "DEXTER-ity: Season Eight"...

    1. Oh that's true. The writers want us to love her so much that we can only hate her more and more. Hanna's character makes me sick.

  4. I agree 100%!!! Seriously, if this series ends with Dexter and Hannah living happily ever after... ugh. Makes me mad just thinking about it. I just might have to boycott Dexter. Kill her off please!

  8. I started dexter a bit late and I've just finished watching season 7 episode 7. Damn I just can't describe how much I hate this character- hannah. Especially when dexter let her go from his killing table and started having sex, I just feel like strangling her as hard as I can. Thanks for the heads up though since you mentioned that hannah is gonna stay till the last season, i'm not going to watch this show as long as hannah is in the show. Fucking make me pissed off. Lovable character? Not so. This is the first time of me hating a character to the core.
P/s I immediately googled "hate hannah mckay" after episode 7 and I found your blog. Damn, you are so awesome! You just put all my hatred into words and described what I feel. Thank you! Hahaha.

  9. I actually really, really like Hannah, but then I was hoping for a "happily ever after" ending with Dexter, Harrison and her. That said it's always good to read the other side and it's nice to see a well written viewpoint from the negative stance too, rather than the usual incomprehensible internet whining. So, my opinions on Hannah haven't changed but thanks for the informative and well-written post :).

  10. In defense of Hannah I don't think it's fair to say that anyone who likes her is only likes her because she's hot. I for one actually like Hannah simply because she was very different from other love interest we've seen before. You say that Hannah was Mary Sue who is totally perfect but she did try to kill Deb then lied about it to Dexter. So she's not totally a Mary Sue. Also, I never saw Hannah as sociopath and I don't think all serial killers are psycho/sociopath (even though most of them are). Or maybe she is a sociopath and her normal persona is just a façade. Sometimes Hannah did strike as so alluring and charming to the point where it's kind of creepy or to the point where it feels like that's hiding something when she clearly is. Furthermore, Hannah never strike me as perfect but rather shady and manipulative. And I have to disagree that wasn't actual chemistry between the two actors and we do see the evolution of their relationship with actions. Hannah could have turned in Dexter and we've seen Dexter go to great lengths to protect her. I do admit that sometimes the show tries to force the viewers to be Team Hannah but I think the reason they want us to invested is because Dexter is invested. I mean his willing to give up being a serial killer for her so she would have to be mighty special to have that kind of affect on him.

    1. After Lumen left, Dexter had been completely fine with affection, but near the end, it felt as if he started gaining genuine feelings. The issue I had with it was it felt somewhat rushed. Hannah was as guilty as all other killers with her murder spree. When they display a scene where Hannah is on Dexter's table and all she has to say is "Do what you gotta do", and all of a sudden Dexter has bounce in his britches, it doesn't feel like a realistic scenario.

  12. I'm 2 episodes away from the end of Dexter and I'm a complete mess. Yeah, it's just a show but I've put a lot of time into my Dexter cram sessions - Ha! In all seriousness, I Google searched "I hate Hannah McKay" and fortunately discovered this blog and I agree with much of your reply. I don't know if fans of her are just physically attracted to her, but perhaps they think she is a slight combination of all three women (Rita, Lila, and Lumen). I feel they just poorly executed telling her story. I don't know... To me, she is a very dull, but sneaky character. SPOILER ALERT! My fear is that she may hurt Dexter and Harrison if they make it to Argentina. Although, she did surprise me when she took Harrison to the hospital and risked being seen. Perhaps I don't HATE Hannah as much as I hate the lack of development of her character. I'm almost too nervous to watch the last two episldes but then I remind myself... it's a freaking show. Lol! Sorry for rambling but thanks for the insightful post and all who commented! :D

The time she went with Harrison to the hospital, she is EXACTLY the same than on the picture all over the news... Never been a killer, but still, it seems to me it's pretty much basic to change your appearance when you're a fugitive...

  14. I know I'm late but I just finished watching Seasons 1 - 7 this month. & yes, Hannah was horribly introduced & the worst character to appear on the show. LaGuerta used to be the one I disliked the most because of her selfish ways, but this Hannah bimbo takes the cake now.

There's also nothing I can't stand more than writers trying so hard to FORCE viewers into liking a character (Hannah obviously). I tried to tolerate her at first, but she got so annoying (while ruining Dexter's character as you described perfectly) to the point that I literally fast-forwarded some parts with her & Dexter lol, the first time being when they had sex on the "death table". I was so happy when he was about to kill her, then almost threw up when he kissed her instead. I don't even know if I wanna watch season 8, especially since I know what happens already. He leaves Harrison with that dull, uninteresting, sneaky murderous blonde bimbo who thinks she's such a f**king victim while killing innocent lives. Harrison doesn't deserve such a horrifying fate being left with that piece of s*** of a woman lol. Lumen should've been the one to return.

Anyway, the only good thing about her character to me is the fact that the girl playing Hannah is a good actress, nothing more. On a side note, The only 3 characters on the show that I like are Doakes, Debra & Dexter (in order), so introducing this horrid character makes me wanna watch Season 8 even less. Great post by the way. I agree with everything about Hannah.

  15. I feel that Hannah is not the real problem. Dexter discovers he can be normal, no thanks to his step dad and the reeepeeee Dr. Vogel who is a dismal failure for life. Dexter could have been normal(hence no show) but was convinced otherwise. Now that he knows it, he should be allowed normal happiness.
He does right by his son, his sister and Hannah until he shows up in the logging camp. How lame.
If he had that much self control then why cheat himself, his son and Hannah! Doesn't make sense. Hannah was just the right girl at the right time!!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Doing right by his son isn't leaving him with a wanted fugitive who tried to kill his aunt for nothing more than her own survival. Hannah wasn't the REAL problem but she was a major one since she was WAY too convenient for the narrative.

  16. I hate her, which is how I found this website. It makes no sense that Dexter would be with her, especially considering that Hannah is a killer of the innocent. Debra hates her. Hannah should be killed or in jail. Every time I see her I just want her to die.

    1. Then Debra is a killer of the innocent too......what about LaGuerta? And don't tell me it was just to protect Dexter because she wanted to protect herself too or did you forget that LaGuerta had some evidence on her in the gás station?

  17. With Hannah they betrayed everything that made Dexter awesome. They suggest that he cant feel the same sort of love that most people feel. Rita spends 4 years loving and caring for him, Yet, he is never really able to express love to her.........But, in walks Hannah in season 7 and 8 and Dexter is like a 15 year old boy with his first crush (im mean WTF was that).

Then, look at his relationship with deb. Now Deb is suppose to be Dexter's Rock in his life. Yet, her feelings about Hannah don't seem to matter to him. Oh, it also dosnt seem to matter that Hannah tried to Kill Deb. And Also the fact that Hannah seems to like killing people for fun when she is first introduced......Yet, By the end of season 8 She is the victim.

Hannah McKay was the worst Character in Dexter. Such a shame that they forced this horrible character into the show.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I completely agree. Especially on the Rita front. Rita was there for him for four years and he could barely reciprocate his love. Even his proposal to her was borrowed from that crazy stalker who killed the guy she claimed to be her boyfriend. Just because Rita didn't know he killed people doesn't make her a bad match. She grounded him. But he was too busy obsessing over his latest kill or, in season 4, Trinity. And yet, Hannah walks into the picture and all of a sudden he's talking and fantasizing a future with her? Of him growing old with her? Married? Her as Harrison's stepmom? Or apparently as Harrison says in season 8, his mom. It's such an offense to me as a fan of Dexter, who has watched every episode (up until season 8, when I stopped midway through) and has watched Dexter as a character, see him grow and become more complex. And someone who saw how good he was with Rita. Sure, Rita could be annoying sometimes. But overall, she was great. Yet, Hannah is the one who was shoved in our faces. You're right. It was such a betrayal.

  18. Haha Wow all I have to say is... lame article

    ReplyDelete
  19. She really sucked. She was like a lamer version of Lila to me and I can't fathom why people would just blindly accept her when she ruined the last two seasons. Season two is what season 8 SHOULD have been, a huge manhunt for the Bay Harbor Butcher not "Where's fucking Hannah Mckay"?. God, worst character implementation ever. Rita's death was impactful but if I knew it would lead to this garbage they should've either kept her alive, develop the Debra romance or somehow bring Lumen back, all of those options were much more satisfying than her.

  20. Thank God you have no power in Showtime or have not to do with the writers of Dexter.I have never seen an article so full of prejudice and hatred like this. Why don't you read any,(I said any) article about sociopaths in any respected journal? You will have the perfect explanation for the character of Hannah and the cause of love of Dexter and her.On top of this:no chemistry,no evolution of the romance? You have to be kidding!

  21. Lumen and his garbage vengeance? And was the intended purpose of the show?Do you think that the purpose was, simply,to tell a story of a vigilante (because this is the real Dexter,a vigilante serial killer created by his foster father and Dr.Vogel)? The character of Hannah has the intention of making Dexter understand that killing was not the only thing that he could do......the Jekyll and Mr.Hyde thing that all of us carries along the life(without extremes,of course).Hannah was the way that the writers found to consolidate the changing of Dexter that begins when the marriage and the son happened in his life and was defined in tne scene with Harry telling him that what happened with him in that container with her mom didn't possessed him but traumatized(remember season 7?)At this point,Dexter realize that the killings were not a thing of a "passenger".....they were his choice and brought guilty to him. The guilt need to be relieved with someone that could support and understand him - equal to him......there is thereason of Hannah

    1. You see, that'd be cool IF HE DIDN'T ALREADY HAVE THAT REVELATION IN SEASON TWO! In Season Two "An Inconvenient Lie", Dexter openly admitting that he was actually starting to care for others and the prospect scared him because he didn't think anyone could love him, but he also realized that maybe that's a lie he's telling himself to convince himself to continue to do as he does. In Season Three, Dexter expressed a strong desire to Harrison born, in Season Four, Dexter expressed great outrage at the way Trinity treated his family and snapped when Trinity attacked Jonah AND when Dexter killed that Cop Lady, he told her that he'd rather risk getting caught then lose his family. Season Five,Dexter took on a fight that wasn't his with Lumen and even put himself out there for another person when he beat up that guy who was beating Astor's friend. In Season Six, Dexter killed Tooth Fairy citing that he wouldn't want Harrison to know what he was. Dexter has ALWAYS been aware THAT THOSE WERE HIS CHOICES AND ACTIONS! He never treated The Dark Passenger as another personality or something else, he ALWAYS treated it as an urge! THAT IS UNTIL SEASON 7 which basically flushed 6 seasons of character development down the toilet. Hannah didn't develope Dexter, she stagnated him, and Dexter didn't need another girlfriend WHO TRIED TO KILL HIS SISTER!

The thing is Dexter never felt guilt for what he had done. If Dexter had decided to stop killing for Harrison and decided to focus on being a father to him, that'd be character development, that'd be Dexter finding fulfillment in something other than killing. But he didn't stop wanting to kill for Harrison, or Deb or Astor or Cody, he wanted to stop killing so he could be with Hannah. In Season 6, Brother Sam noted that Dexter actually smiles whenever Harrison is mentioned, Dexter ACTUALLY DOES LOVE HIS SON! That SHOULD'VE been motivation but no, some Blonde shows up and now Dexter wants give up everything.

      Delete
    2. And let's not forget that part in "Teenage Wasteland" in Season 5 where he tells Astor while their in the car that he loves her and is proud of her. Dexter is a complex character who developed those feelings of love for Astor and Cody even after Rita died and they moved to Orlando. He still protected Astor and, as Ugo said, Astor's friend. There were so many things that made him a multi-dimensional character. That "humanized" him. But Hannah was put up on this pedestal like the only person who made him feel, the only person who understood him, which was not the case.

      Delete
    3. And moreover, portraying Hannah as the only person who understood Dexter underscores his serial killer side. The writers could have made a sign where in big neon letters, underlined, with exclamation points it said "Serial Killer" instead of putting Hannah in the show. Because if you want to say that Hannah's the only one who understood Dexter because she has also killed, then you are only focusing on the fact that Dexter kills people and he only needs another killer to help him understand who he really is.

      Delete
    4. I came back to the blog and saw your post answering some observations I did ,something don't feels right....Hannah,in my point of view ,was the one who undersood the split on the personality of Dexter. She saw his need to kil but she denies his necessity of the code and that's the difference to the others of the life of Dexter, but at the show(and I think this was a big mistake) she only could do thab because of her capacity to kill too.The real thing about them is that both of them have the same motto: kill to eliminate problems in a selfish way or for the greater good and this made them extremely valuable for each other. In my point of view, the great mistake of the show is the assumption that Dexter was a psycopath from the beginning and not only a serial killer;it causes an great confusion because how to justify a psycopath "feelings"?If he was a psycopath he never would live honoring a code (aside the "don't get caught" thing)and this was a huge contradiction on the show. The writers need something to justify the part of "feel"of the character and nothing more easy that a partner similar to him, someone that could kill but had a relatively "normal"interaction with the society, who desired kids,a happy life, marriage despite her dark side and, manly, could see in him something beyong the killing ability(remember the talk at Debra's house when Hannah said to Dexter that he was much more that someone who kills? or some like that). The reason why she could notice his split was never clear, but, she did and support him or better than that she didn't judge him,and I think that this was the huge difference making him to feel safe(remember that?).I hope that, now,I can make you understand my point of view..... can't see Hannah as an insult to fans (I'm a huge fan too),I see her as a need of the writers to give a little support for Dexter managing his "normal life" with kids, partner, reciprocity in a way that I've already said a sister or a son couldn't provide. Thanks for the opportunity to explain myself.

    5. Okay. I apologize for saying Hannah was an insult to Dexter fans. That’s a generalization that I shouldn’t have made. You clearly are a Dexter fan and have different views on Hannah than I do. That being said, I still maintain my view that using the fact that she also kills people - which she never did for the greater good only to suit her own desires- to portray her as the only one who really understood Dexter was an insult to me as a Dexter fan (and a Rita fan as well) because I see Dexter as more than a serial killer. And I think that using the fact that Hannah also has a need to kill (Which is very different from Dexter’s need. Hannah’s need to kill is to get people out of the way.) as the thing that makes her truly understand Dexter’s struggles is wrong. Because, to me, it underscores his serial killer status. It means the only person who can really understand Dexter is another killer. It makes him less than what he is. And I think the show, from the very beginning, shows Dexter to be more than a killer and even his killing is more than just killing. His need to kill is very complex- hence the need for Harry’s code to control it. So I think shoving Hannah in my face as Dexter’s perfect woman and using the fact that she is a killer too (again for very different reasons) as evidence for her being the only one to truly understand Dexter reduces Dexter to just being a serial killer. And I don’t think that’s the case. That’s my view. I don’t agree with you. And I’m not trying to change your opinion of Hannah. Obviously you have different opinions of her than I do. I just don’t agree with your arguments. You can read the other comments I’ve written here in case you want to see more reasons why I don’t think Hannah was a good fit for the show or for Dexter. I’m not sure if you have. The only person that has responded to those other comments besides Ugo is Anonymous and you’re Anonymous too, so I can’t tell. Anyway, I don’t see the point of Hannah. I think she brought the show down. But I can see that we don’t see eye to eye. So let’s just agree to disagree.

    6. Jess,I agree disagreee but I have to clarify one thing: when I wrote that sentence about the same motto,I was saying that Hannah acomplish the motto by killing in a selfish way except for the cases of self defense which I can'doubt as it was that way in the show and Dexter did his killings for a greater good except,of course in the cases of Lila(punishment),the guy in the bathroom after Rita's death (explosion of rage) and Clint McKay ( protecting Hannah).I was not trying to change your opinion,I was simply stating my own and I was very glad that Ugo,at some part, found that "solid". I read all your comments in the blog, but I only feel the need to respond the ones involving comments that I have posted.Greetings from Brazil and,by the way,

    8. It's a pleasure to talk to you about a show that we care so much about...here,in my country,I can't find no blogs to discuss Dexter.I can't sign my posts for the reason I explained but the posts that I wrote were those with the date April,15th and it was great that a person like you considered them"solid".You know, the thing that surprised me a lot ,in all the blgs, interviews and debates about Dexter that I've read was the absence of critic about the description of Dexter as a psycopath pure and simple; for me that was the great mistake of the plot because of this they have to create so many situations for justif ysome reactions of Dexter, including marriage, son, regrets that at the end of the day they were completely lost as some facts of season 8 showed. But, despite of the critics, errors that happened it was a great show that fascinated me for 8 seasons and gave me some memorable scenes. Glad to meet you,Ugo.Angie

    9. I NEVER classified Dexter as fully psychopath, Dexter is emotionally stunned and morbidly drawn to recreate his nightmare (ie, his mother's murder) to the point he fell in love with it. I've always likened Dexter to a kid who has emotions but can't quite grasp them or understand them enough to know what's happening. I point this out when after Rita dies, Dexter's first instinct is to run (kind of like a kid who accidently break's the neighbor's window). Also Dexter expressed a great affinity for kids and was even sad to see Astor and Cody go in Season 5. Dexter's physically an adult but understands and feels the way a child does. Dexter (throughout the series) has often managed to grab hold of mature emotions and recognize them for what they are, The Dark Passenger was the side of him that altered those emotions, The Dark Passenger was that side of Dexter that compelled him to cope with his mother's murder by recreating it again and again and again until he loved it. That's why I had an issue with them treating The Dark Passenger as if it was another personality and somehow Dexter never thought himself responsible. The Dark Passenger was much more of a vague concept. Anyways, I'm glad you like my blog and I'm glad to meet you too. =D

    10. You didn't classified him as a psycopath but the writers did or better than ,they made some characters to do this as Harry and Dr. Vogel......when the latter called Dexter "the perfect psycopath"I wanted to die.I absolutely agree with you when you tell that Dexter was childish in some way....and I'm happy to see that someone understands my point about that label that they put on him:they did that and, after this, they couldn't explain the "changes"that ocurred during the series.Sorry for the bad English,Angie

  22. I agre with yoy that there were SIGNS of the changings of Dexter during all seasons, but ,you will excuse me, but Dexter alwais treated the Dark Passenger as a force within him that pushes him to do what he does.Remember that scene with Harry that I described before (season 7) and realize how afraid he was as Harry described him as traumatized and not possessed....if I'm not wrong he said something that "it wasalways me".....What I was discussing above and I'm quite sure of it is that,at the show, was the character of Hannah (and not Lila)that understood that confusion of the charater of Dexter and...... was this fact that made all the difference for him and made her "the place where we don't need to hide(words of Sirko -season 7 at the gay bar)....In my opinion,Dexter didn't want to stop killing to be with Hannah because this was not necessary for them,he did want stop killing because he thinks that that emptines about we always hear him talking about, was fullfilled in a manner that a son or sister could not do,but
a partner could (love or not is another discussion). We can continue on and on about this, but the fact is that I see the characters in a way and you do another...I think that your hatred for Hannah is not necessary because she was a character with a purpose in the show that was not "garbage"like someone said but you think this way,it's ok.Irespect your point of view and I expect you to do the same. Each one of ours will,no doubt, have a final that we think would be the best, let's stay with them.My compliments to your blog.

    1. That's pretty solid reasoning, I just think that if that's what the producers were going for from the get-go, they could've done a much better job doing that. But I have to say, your opinion is pretty solid. However I still hold the fact that Dexter was always aware he was the one committing these acts and not The Dark Passenger, yes he constantly referred to The Dark Passenger but he never treated it as anything more than an urge, feeling or force. Season 7 suggests that Dexter blamed The Dark Passenger for what he did as if it was someone else and not himself. Dexter never treated The Dark Passenger as another him but rather "How He Feels When...". Good stuff though, Great discussion.

  23. Thank you for this! I went from being in love with the show Dexter to downright hating it and it's all because of Hannah. I won't even touch the seventh season (after I watched it, I can't go back) and I didn't bother to finish the eighth one. Like others, I literally searched "I hate Hannah Mckay" on Google and found your blog. I despise Hannah because she still thinks she's a good person after everything she's done. She called Deb a hypocrite for supporting Dexter but Hannah is all the time trying to defend herself. Remember when she told Deb that killing people sometimes is the only way she knows how to solve a problem? I also can’t stand her because we are forced to like her. We are forced to believe she is Dexter's perfect woman, when in reality, she goes against what he believes in. And just because she's a killer doesn't make her a perfect match for him! Dexter is very adherent to Harry's Code. I believe the only time he truly deviated from that (before Hannah killed her way into his life) is after Rita's death (Which I think was the most ludicrous part of the series. No way did killing off Rita add something positive to the storyline. It was just there for shock value. But after the shock was over, I was just annoyed.) when he killed that guy in that bathroom. He killed his own brother because his brother tried to kill Deb. And that really hurt Dexter to do that. He didn't know Bryan that well after they got split up after their mom's murder, so it might be easy to dismiss Bryan as not being that important to Dexter. Like Dexter didn't really get to know him so it wasn't as hard to kill Bryan. But it did hurt him. He cried. He felt a connection to Bryan. He felt a connection all throughout the first season when he was trying to find out who the Ice Truck Killer was and then even more so after he found out it was his brother. He was very hurt that he killed Bryan. You can see that in the second season too, when he was trying to start killing again after Bryan's death. It pained him to kill Bryan but he did it because of Deb. Thus, I don't understand why it was so difficult for him to kill Hannah. Is it because she challenged him while she was on the kill table? He didn't know Hannah at all. All he knew was that she murdered people, which made her a good candidate for his kill table. Yet instead of killing her, he cuts the tape and has sex with her on the kill table. Twice! He killed his own brother. Yet Hannah, who he didn’t know at all, shouldn’t be killed. Why? What could she have possibly done that would keep Dexter from killing her? He kills his own brother, who he feels a deep connection to, but has sex with Hannah. And then after she tries to kill Deb, which is a big no-no in Dexter’s book given that that is the reason he killed his brother, he still loves her. Sure he gives the police Sal’s pen. But then he goes and visits her in prison and apologizes even though Hannah’s reasoning for drugging Deb was “You were supposed to choose me.” And then in the eighth season, Hannah’s back and he’s still in love with her! Forget about how she came back, poisoning him and Deb. But oh no, that’s fine because if Hannah really wanted to kill him and Deb she would have done so. So Hannah tries to kill Deb once and then comes back to Miami and poisons Deb and Dexter and what does Dexter do? He sleeps with her. He loves her. Meanwhile, Bryan Moser is rolling around in his grave asking “Well, why did you kill me? I’m your brother.” It’s just so messed up. It’s so convoluted...continued in next post.

    1. You are right,Hannah was trying to defend herself but she doesn't call the others a murderer and a liar like Debra did having a brother like Dexter.Justice for Debra is for someone she loves, for all the others is only punishment.

      Delete
    2. That doesn't make what Hannah did any less awful. She killed people and she didn't even have the guts to own up to what she did. She kept making excuses saying things like "Killing people is the only way I know how to solve a problem". How many people does she need to kill in her life to solve problems? For example, the woman who originally had the nursery. No real reason was given that described why Hannah would kill her- other than the fact that Hannah wanted what was hers. She kills people and has the audacity to act innocent. And Dexter sticks up for her. Remember when Dr. Vogel called her a psychopath? Dexter said she wasn't. That she had feelings. Does a person with feelings kill people? Does a person with feelings kill people and not care, not even own up to it? Hannah's a weak character. I'm glad the show's over now. She brought it down.

    3. Oh yes,nor all psycopath is a serial killer nor all serial killers are psycopaths...and people with feelings kill people depending on their reasons...what Hannah did is not ok,but it didn´t make the acts of Debra right. Remember La Guerta? You see how people with feelings kill: Debre kill ElSapo out of rage...she said it:"he beat the hell out of me" didn´t she?

      Delete
    4. I'm just talking about Hannah not Debra. Debra is quite the character herself. She shouldn't have killed La Guerta or El Sapo. I never said that was okay. At least when Deb killed La Guerta you can see how much remorse she felt. It tore her up. She quit the force and she joined a PI firm, and she wasn't even good about checking in. Elway never knew where she was. She killed La Guerta and it was wrong, but she didn't try to defend herself like Hannah constantly did. She didn't try to sugarcoat her killing and refer to it as problem solving. She knew what she did was wrong. It affected her and it affected Dexter. We don't really know what truly happened with El Sapo if I remember correctly. We only find out later on in the episode that Deb killed him. And when we find out its Deb, we still see how it came from a place of torment. Deb was really harsh about how she killed him. She wasn't nearly as remorseful as she was with La Guerta- as shooting La Guerta killed her spirit- but she wasn't pretending like what she did was good either. She was just rough. With Hannah it was denying that killing spree with Randall, then she agreed to let Sal interview her for his book and then she killed him, and then she tried to kill Deb and was pissed at Dexter for turning her in saying "You were supposed to choose me." Then, she poisons her way into season 8 and when Dexter asks her in the greenhouse why he poisoned her and Deb she told him that he didn't have the right to know after he turned her in. Forgetting apparently that she tried to kill Deb and not only didn't feel remorse but was pissed at Dexter for choosing Deb. Then, she kills her husband apparently in self-defense and has Dexter clean it up. Let's not forget she killed her first husband because, according to her, he wanted her to have an abortion. She keeps killing people and not only shows no remorse, no feeling at all, but she doesn't even own up to it. She just kills people to get her way and then denies she was being malicious at all. And I'm supposed to believe she's a good character? That she's good for Dexter? She's a very one-dimensional character. But let's agree to disagree, because I don't want to change your opinion. Your opinion is your own. And I know I'm not going to change mine.

  24. ...Also, I didn’t see the latter half of season 8 but I know that Dexter leaves Harrison with Hannah- big mistake. By the way, side note, can we point out how unrealistic it is that Harrison remembers Hannah? He’s four. Hannah was only in his life for a short period of time before she went to jail. Yet he remembers her? I have family that I’ve gone to visit one summer and then gone back to see the following summer and their kids forget me. How does Harrison remember Hannah? Anyway, Dexter leaves Harrison with Hannah. Rita would have loved that. And Hannah is not just a murderer she’s the worst babysitter ever. I saw the clip of Harrison on the treadmill. Hannah does not do anything until Harrison falls. She sees him on the treadmill. He starts the treadmill. She doesn’t move from the kitchen. She just says: “Harrison, remember what your dad said. That’s not a toy.” He starts the treadmill and starts walking on it. She’s still in the kitchen telling him to stop. He speeds up the treadmill. She waits a couple seconds and then she starts walking towards him. But, too late, he fell. Anybody would have taken him off the treadmill from the moment he stepped on it. Including a teenager. If Harrison was being babysat by a high school student, he would have been off that treadmill before anything happened. Yet, Hannah, a grown woman, the apple of Dexter’s eye, who has been entrusted with Harrison by Dexter, will not move from the kitchen. So if I didn’t want her around my kid because she’s a murderer, I definitely don’t want her around my kid because she’s an irresponsible babysitter. Hannah is just awful. And you’re right. The writers forced us to like Hannah. But just because she kills people doesn’t make her a good match for Dexter, let alone a perfect match. Also, what did you mean by “not to mention Harrison really likes her, in one of the most offensive lines EVER spoken on Dexter”? What line are you referring to? I’m sorry this post is so long. It’s just I loved Dexter, the show, so much and was so disappointed when they brought Hannah on and made her out to be Dexter’s perfect woman. Dexter was also an interesting, complex character. But he turned into mush when he met Hannah. He became so weak. No longer everybody’s favorite serial killer. Thanks for the post. Glad to know I’m not alone.

  25. OMG,Ugo...now we discussing the ability of Hannah as baby sitter? How about she risked herself to carry Harrison to an hospital? It's not that much but shows that she cares for him.

    1. I didn't bring up Hannah as a babysitter, Jess did. However, I would like to bring up how stupid Hannah is by putting Debra's name down as her own when she arrived at the hospital.

      Delete
    2. If Hannah had gotten Harrison off of the treadmill instead of watching him from the kitchen like a horrible babysitter, she wouldn't have had to risk anything to go to the hospital. It's not noble that despite being a wanted fugitive she went to the hospital for Harrison. She is the reason he got hurt in the first place. She didn't do the most basic thing of keeping a four year old off of a treadmill. And the writers want us to believe she's Harrison's replacement mommy.

      Delete
    3. Not noble? Didn´t she have the right to make it right?

      Delete
    4. The way I see it is she couldn’t do a basic thing. If I’m leaving my son in the care of someone else, I’m going to want that someone else to follow the basic rule of babysitting: watch the child to prevent him from getting hurt. Not watch him clearly do something dangerous from the kitchen with no action. For instance, if I’m in the kitchen cooking, and the child I’m watching is walking around watching me cook, I’m going to make sure to put the knives and any other sharp utensils away from the child so he doesn’t grab it. I’m not going to watch a child grab at a knife and wait for him to listen to me say “Put it down.” Thus, I would expect of someone who is babysitting my child, to say nothing of someone who I believe to be my child’s new mommy, to act before something bad goes down. But, I don’t want to argue with you back and forth about this. If your argument to me is that at least she took him to the hospital, my response would be that that’s what you’re supposed to do. Wanted fugitive or not. If a child is injured, you have to take him to the hospital whether or not you’ll get caught. You have to help the child, especially considering you let the child hurt himself. The fact that she went to the hospital also doesn’t matter in that Hannah has never tried to hide from the police. Never. She escaped from prison and then came back to Miami and the first thing she did was poison Deb and Dexter. Poison the woman she had already drugged once. Returning to Miami let alone poisoning people on your first day back is not the work of a criminal who thinks she’s going to get caught. So the fact that she took him to the hospital isn’t a big deal on that front, because that’s how she handles life as a fugitive in general. But I don’t want to argue. I clearly have my opinion and you clearly have yours. Let’s just leave it at that.

  26. It's funny you know that you insist on calling her stupid and, however, she didn't get caught. She was smart enough to know that people are protecting her,she was grateful for that (remember the thanks to Debra) and she outsmarted Elway who was an experienced P.I. Ops,I never said that that you brought up the nanny thing, simply, it surprised me that an space like your blog where we could read a discussion like that ocurred at April 15th,kind of endorses that.I know, perfectly, that a blog is a space where all people can expose their thoughts but you can be a moderator without so many passion....

    1. Hannah only managed to get away with it because everyone else was stupid as well. In my breakdown of Season 8, I pointed out that The U.S. Marshall didn't even request camera footage from the hospital to ascertain of Hannah was indeed there and instead decided to ask Debra. Secondly, for Elway to be an experienced P.I. and go walking into Debra's house for a fake apology to look for signs of Hannah was VERY amateur, AS WELL as alerting Hannah to the fact that he had her cornered on the bus (very amateur). Remember in Season 5 when Stan Liddy bugged the hell out of Dexter's apartment and was monitoring his conversations and even had video of Dexter and Lumen. THAT is how you do it.

Also U.S. Marshall would have a legit reason to monitor Dexter and Debra (after all he did turn her in and she did try to kill Debra) if those are not legit reasons for keeping a security detail on them, I don't know what is. But dude was too stupid to even pretend to do his job. He just walked around asking questions (he should've known the answer to) and nodded his head. I wouldn't be bringing this up if the show didn't set a precedent of characters catching on to Dexter. Doakes found out who Dexter was, Hell even Quinn did and he outsourced to job to someone Dexter didn't know so he wouldn't see it coming. All of this, and yet a U.S. Marshall and a Private Eye couldn't catch a mass murdering blonde super model who was too stupid to change her appearance or use a fake name when going to the hospital. Frank Lundy would've caught her in 1/2 of an episode.

  27. But she managed.......you know you analyse the show very welll, but you seem to forget that in a show there are things that escape from our control or desire.I read that you are writer too and it séems to me that you read the plot like a writer not like an average fan...and it's easy to analyse things from an outside perspective.....about Lundy,I liked him a lot but he didn't understand the killings and caught the wrong guy,did he?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Keen insight, yes, I do view the plot as a writer. Very insightful for you to notice. That being said, yes, Lundy caught the wrong guy but admitted that Doakes probably wasn't The Bay Harbor Butcher and the only reason he couldn't help LaGuerta is because she and Doakes went against protocol. Also, he had no reason to suspect Dexter. But remember, Lundy even put Dexter's marina under surveillance. Lundy and Liddy both put Dexter under surveillance, but a U.S. Marshall doesn't request camera footage or stake out Dexter and Debra's home? Yeah, that's being EXTREMELY bad at your job. You remember in Season Two when Dexter had to pull out all the stops just to cover his tracks? When did Hannah do anything to keep herself from getting caught? Everything that kept her from getting caught was stupidity on the part of everyone else.

  29. I am watching Dexter by instant steaming so am late to the show and providing feedback. I have watched it almost every night for months, and just now got to the middle of season 7. I am SO DISAPPOINTED with the Hannah storyline. It made me lose so much respect and appreciation for Dexter and the writers. First of all, Dexter supposedly had a code that has been deeply ingrained in him throughout the entire series. Now all the sudden, he is okay with Hannah who is a serial killer. I have not seen all the Hannah episodes yet, so maybe they will show her to have some kind of code, but when he had his sex scene with her the night he was going to kill her, there was no code. He knew her as a serial killer, but all of the sudden because of an overwhelming "chemistry," he throws his code out the window to have sex with a killer. On top of that, Hannah was supposedly on a date with Dexter, he drugs her, she wakes up nude and strapped to a table, then all of the sudden has sex!? Seriously! Even a totally messed up woman would not be okay with that. It's too far off for me to understand. It feels that the male writers were writing out some sexual fantasy that they somehow thought was sexy and that others would think that. In order for it to be sexy to female viewers, there has to be a seductive story beyond just physical attraction. I feel Dexter lowered his standards, and it makes me feel less empathy for him, but instead feel turned off and even disgusted by him. I like it when he has higher standards and I can still have some respect for him. He is coming across as too messed up now.

  31. Does the author even know what a sociopath is? Sociopaths can't feel any empathy for others. That's not what Hannah is. I hate her, but she is not a sociopath. 32. Hannah ruined the whole series for me. Sloppy, sloppy writing. There are no excuses for a poorly written Mary Sue unless you're 14 year old and writing a Twilight fanfic or something.
I've liked almost every character in Dexter, but something got broken around season 7, with Jamie and Hannah. It's a shame, because it was a great show prior to that.

Dexter feels completely ooc and the show is basically revolving around Hannah. Season 7 had so many other important storylines that could've been focused on - Deb dealing with Dexter and Laguerta figuring out about Dexter - but those were pushed to the back so they could focus on Hannah...SMH

Even when i was pissed by Lila i understood that everything was cleverly shot, cleverly developed without a problem or gap. Even that i didnt like in the beginning Lumen, still later i understood her situation very deep and i would kill myself those bastards rather than any other bastard in the movie (plus Hanna:)). And then hop - wtf with season 7? And then 8? I was waiting for a clever development and was sure everything should fit to me as before, but it didnt and didnt. And i was hating Hanna and directors together with her:) but after thinking through night and day everything became clear to me!
I truly waited for no way that Dexter will go back to her. And i was right. Though not immediately realized how deep it was put.
And what happened? Before death of Deb he was ok planning future with Hanna. When Dexter faced death of Deb, to my opinion, he immediately hated Hanna for what she brought up in him - this HUMAN bullshit which led to let his beloved sister get shot. He just couldnt imagine to return to this woman who fucked up HIM inside and outside! There could be no future not coz of non be able protecting Hanna, but coz he already didnt protect Deb by being fucked up in his nature by Hanna. He stayed for Deb to kill Saxton, and acting like an asshole according to the role Hanna raised in him he lost Deb. But he couldnt stay anywhere else than isolation or death (this is open how intentionally it was, after Ritas death he also took boat and pushed boat to nowhere). If he lives normal life Hanna could find him for example or other people would require explanations.
Now i can sleep calmly and again love my dear Dexter to the bottom of my heart:) i hope this would make you also feel easier and logical about the end.

  37. So, the fact that we hated Hanna was coz she was clearly presented as a negative character, which means AGAINST DEXTER. Everything makes sense now. As in case with Lila, i bet most of you hated Lila, but there it was clear, the means by which director presented her negativity were easy to catch: vulgar appearance, vulgar speech etc. With Hanna everything was also quite clear, but on more inner levels with a good cover of her appearanceas. She didnt give a shit about victims, never regreted, she was criminal, she was empty, she had appearance that attracts for bad destiny, she tried to kill Deb etc, this exactly was meant to say. She was never positioned as positive but very cleverly presented as positive to other characters of the movie with whome we are loyal, but actually negative until the very end where this idea came true as i wrote up. Thats we were correct feeling so bad about her and previous episode and characters didnt let our intuition down.

And i was thinking about one observation that hurricane was called Laura as Dexters mother. Some people say that it had meaning that it came to destroy. But i came to the idea that accroding to the final explanation which i wrote up, the meaning was not in destruction, but that Dexter turned the boat to real himself in this metaphor, directly to the inside of his "mother".

  38. And if i didnt make you tired yet, this is my review from imbd 2 parts
    :)
If you feel betrayed and cheated - you were betrayed and cheated by
Hanna Mackay - thats EXACTLY how Dexter was feeling at the end!! You
were right!! Thats what makes the end genius - disappointment!!

Yes i felt at the end also what the cooking cook, what is that??!! I
didn't sleep all night and day trying to find explanation, because it
was shocking exactly by all reasons how are described by people who
gave 0 point in review!! And i found it!

Who was real Dexter whom we followed so much time and loved? He was
serial killer that we all know his nature! What was the main "song"
that started with irritating seasons 7-8? That he doesn't want to kill
anymore because of Hanna, he wants to be with her, etc. even his father
says at the end, you are not old Dexter anymore. He stopped to be
himself and this delusion came to him from Hanna! Basically, that was
AGAINST his nature, surprise, but Hanna was exactly who brought him
against himself! In this story Hanna is not a positive character, she
is exactly his enemy! I hated Hanna, i knew it inside, and even if you
loved her, thats has explanation too. You were LOYAL with Dexter.
Loyalty is when you believe to somebody about good or bad as a given,
without doubts if they are right or wrong. Those who hated her were
loyal with Debra, she was inseparable part of Dexter.

Hanna actually was never presented as a positive character. She was
from beginning negative. If you read about narrative theory and means
to present characters, you will learn a few interesting things how
author or director develops the story and by which means. Hanna was
never presented positive. Therer is not a single action from director
about this. The biggest cheat starts from her appearance. Previous
women were classically blond if they were good, kind looking, sweet, or
black bad like Lila with many supporting details. And here the first
delusion comes - Hanna is blond, supposed to be good, but empty of any
other proof about this. She is not exactly sweet, the actress was
chosen to show her, is someone from whom men loose head, model looking,
drilling eyes, very stressed lips when she talks same all the time.
    Blond but not good.

  39. In narrative the author maybe of 2 types: the
audience see story only through his eyes, and the omni-present author
(who sees everything). Here is a mix. Dexter is the first type,
everything else is the second type. And now notice, that Hanna was
never shown to us from the eyes of omni present author. Everybody else
were shown sometimes alone, out of Dexter vision, we could see how they
reflect about their actions, their thought, regrets, worries, joys.
Hanna - never. She was NEVER shown alone with her thoughts, actions.
Only through Dexters eyes, she was only his own delusion of real
himself!! NEXT cheat how they met. She was already under crime
investigation! Director shows us only how she drills Dexter with her
eyes to seduce him, thats clear in every scene. Of course! On him is
her future, he rules the evidence! There could be no other solution!
Doubt? You think the rich guy with yacht appeared out of nothing later? Same
story! She needed to survive, how she explains all her crimes, she
needs to be protected!! The only reason of any her cold action! Only to
escape investigation, then prison, then being caught. You think it took
her much time to turn Harrison into love to her?:)

She was always given to this movie as a negative, which means enemy to
Dexter and this is who she was to be! He acts according to this not
real himself and doesn't kill Saxon and result is vegetable state of
Debora! He took decision and understood exactly that moment. She is his
inseparable part! Look second time last episode, everything is there!
Later he tells him in police camera, you helped me to see who i really
am, cut pieces and blood! When Debora becomes vegetable, it strikes him
and he hates this himself whom he turned to be because of Hanna!
Basically he hates Hanna at that moment! You feel cooked up because you
feel exactly how he feels at that moment!! He is not gonna be with that
woman never! Look how he talks on phone last time. To Hanna very cold,
only where are you? and words of love only to Harrison!

So, congratulations, you felt exactly right being pissed by the end,
because you felt Dexter and it means you really watched and your love to
    him is not ruined!

Woahh and her last phrase to Harrison? Lets go eat an ice-cream?;)
Thats the genius peak of her expression as a negative character!! When
else Hanna offered somebody to eat unless it aimed at getting rid of
unnecessary ballast, especially that she didn't need him anymore after
    escaping from USA?;)

  41. Just watched the part in season 7 episode 12 where she tells dexter "you were supposed to choose me." ugh boils my blood. What makes me even madder is right before that, feeling sorry for herself, she says sarcastically "I really like my cell mate. She robbed a liquor store to buy some meth." As if she, remoreseless cold-blooded killer of five people, is somehow better than an addict. Out of all the extremely annoying things Hannah says and does this one probably pissed me off the most, probably because I'm a recovering meth addict myself and I know that addiction has nothing to do with morality, class, or intelligence. Fucking bitch ruined the show and then shit and pissed all over it.

  42. OH MY GOD!!! I love this! I have been stewing over how much I freaking hated Hannah since the damned show ended. She fucking ruined it and I Just never saw what the fuck Dexter saw in her! She was completely a "Mary Sue" character for sure. I just really, really hated her. She ruined the last season of Dexter. And Dexter handing his kid off to her?? What the fuck was he thinking??!!!! ARRGH!! Fucking Hannah!

  44. Just wanted to chime in how good you reviewed this! I started binge watching dexter after the announcment of New blood and ive reached the season with Hannah and i cant express how unwell she sit with me because it was so obvious she was put there to be 'liked' as the hot love interest, and im like why? Why would a serial killer fall for such a blatant 'flesh' reason for someone? He's supposed to be calculative, smart, but it just seems he thought with his dick the entire season which was a polar opposite to how he was in the previous seasons where he never approached a woman with the desire to have sex with her or 'chemistry'.. They should have just returned Lumen it would make a ton more sense, or i dunno, explored something with Debrah, would make more sense atleast. And leaving his son with someone who is a known 'killer' ?? Why? I just pray she doesnt make an appearance in New blood or ill throw up. ( Nothing against Yvonne cuz i love her as an actress, especially in mass effect), also im about to start reading the books and thank god she doesnt appear in them.

  45. Hanna is such a douche bag! She just expects Dexter to do everything to keep her safe. She acts like he is hers. She never ever, not once, tries to put on a wig, cut or dye her hair, put on make up or wear disguising clothing to even try to hide when she is out in public. She doesn't care that she is a a poisoned-murderer. She doesn't think anything is wrong, she just can't handle prison, which I get that. I have never really liked any of Dexter's girlfriends, they are all needy, they think they own him, always messing up his plans.

  46. INDEED. I agree with everything. "Hannah came into the series with Dexter fumbling like a moron in an attempt to get a cheek swab from her." Exactly! This was the moment when I started to hate her! And it was so obvious that is some e sort of command for show's viewers like "love her, love her, LOVE her". What an absurd idea!!! Dexter is not Dexter in this scene, which pisses off an every thinking viewer even more, who doesn't need cheap, idiotic entertainment, but something more.

    1. And one more thing. I felt much more sorry for Isaac Sirco than for Hannah. Why? Because he is a flesh and blood character, well played, well introduced to the series, bringing something significant. The scenes with him were a fantastic counterbalance to those with the "dexter" Mery Sue.
